Sellsmith

Updated 3 min read

Sellsmith is a chat widget built for WooCommerce stores that lose buyers when nobody is around to answer questions about delivery, stock, or price.

Rather than acting as a generic support bot, it behaves like a sales assistant, answering shoppers from a store’s actual product catalog and a set of policy answers the owner writes once, then pointing ready buyers to WhatsApp with an order summary already drafted. It suits store owners who want a chatbot answering around the clock without hiring extra staff.

The chat replies are generated by Google Gemini, and the site owner needs a personal Gemini API key, obtained through Google AI Studio, to switch the AI mode on.

Before answering a product question, the plugin searches the store’s live WooCommerce catalog for matching items so replies reflect real prices and stock. Everything runs inside the WordPress dashboard: setup happens under the plugin’s own admin menu, and conversations, leads, and stats appear there as they come in.

Key Features of Sellsmith

Answers built from real buyer questions. The setup form walks the owner through the questions buyers ask most, covering delivery charges, availability, cash on delivery, checking parcels before paying, faults, discounts, and buying in bulk. These answers can be written in any language and are reused automatically whenever a buyer raises the topic.

Live product answers with cards. When a shopper asks about an item, the AI searches the store’s current WooCommerce catalog before replying and shows product cards with image, price, and link. If nothing matches, it says so instead of guessing at a price or stock level.

WhatsApp handoff with a written order. Once a buyer is ready to purchase, the widget displays a WhatsApp button with the product, price, quantity, and city already filled into the message. It uses the standard wa.me link, so it opens the buyer’s own WhatsApp app without needing WhatsApp Business API access or Meta approval.

Two operating modes. AI mode answers from the product catalog and business profile using the connected Gemini key, while Message mode works without an API key and simply collects each visitor’s question and contact details as a lead.

Leads inbox and stats. Every conversation is logged under the plugin’s Leads screen, showing the buyer’s city when mentioned, the products discussed, the full transcript, and whether the buyer clicked through to WhatsApp. A stats view tracks chats for the day and week along with WhatsApp clicks.

Automatic language matching. The chatbot detects whatever language a visitor types in and replies in that language, covering languages such as Urdu, Arabic, Spanish, and German among others, without any extra configuration.

Fallback and quota protection. If the Gemini quota is used up, the widget switches to a plain WhatsApp button instead of failing, and rate limiting per visitor helps keep usage within the free daily allowance.

Works with or without WooCommerce. On any WordPress site the chatbot can still answer from the business profile and collect leads. Product search and product cards turn on automatically once WooCommerce is active on the site.

How to Install Sellsmith

Step 1: Install and activate. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Sellsmith, then click Install Now followed by Activate.

Step 2: Get a Gemini API key. Create a free Google Gemini API key through Google AI Studio; this takes a minute and does not require entering card details.

Step 3: Connect the key. Open Sellsmith > Connection, paste in the API key, and press Test connection to confirm it works.

Step 4: Complete the business profile. Fill in the Business Profile tab with answers to common buyer questions and add the store’s WhatsApp number.

Step 5: Turn on the widget. In the Chat Widget tab, switch on Show widget so the chatbot appears live on the store for visitors.

Good to Know About Sellsmith

According to the plugin’s documentation, Google’s free Gemini tier typically covers roughly 1,000 or more requests a day, which fits most stores since a single chat exchange uses only a few requests; heavier usage is billed directly by Google rather than by the plugin developer.

The developer notes that keeping billing turned off on the Google project tied to the key keeps requests within that free daily allowance. Conversations, leads, and the API key are stored on the site itself and shared only with Google for generating replies, not with the plugin developer.

The plugin also integrates with WordPress’s built-in privacy tools, allowing a visitor’s chat data to be exported or erased, with retention settings and suggested privacy policy text available under the settings screens.
