ExertPro Image Optimizer

Updated 3 min read

ExertPro Image Optimizer is built for WordPress site owners who want a leaner, more accessible Media Library without manually reviewing every image.

It compresses existing images, identifies files that are no longer used anywhere on the site, and can generate descriptive alt text for images automatically. It suits blogs, business sites, and WooCommerce stores that have accumulated large numbers of images over time.

The alt text feature works on a bring-your-own-key basis: the plugin does not include any AI service itself, so a site owner must obtain an API key from a supported provider, such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, xAI Grok, Moonshot AI Kimi, or Google Gemini, and enter it under the plugin’s Settings.

When alt text generation is triggered, the plugin sends the image to the selected provider using that stored key and writes the returned description back into the Media Library. No provider is contacted unless a key has been entered and generation is actively requested.

Key Features of ExertPro Image Optimizer

Bulk image compression. Compresses JPEG, PNG, and WebP files across the Media Library using GD or Imagick, with adjustable quality settings and a size threshold to target only larger images. Original files are backed up automatically so they can be restored if needed.

Unused image detection. Scans post content, featured images, theme customizer settings, widgets, Gutenberg blocks, and ACF fields to locate images that are no longer referenced anywhere on the site. Unused images can then be sent to trash or deleted permanently, freeing up storage.

WooCommerce image scanning. When WooCommerce is active, the unused image scanner also checks product images and galleries, helping store owners clear out leftover product media that is no longer attached to any listing.

AI alt text generation. Generates concise, SEO-friendly alt text for images by sending them to a chosen AI provider using the site owner’s own API key. This helps fill in missing alt attributes across the Media Library to support accessibility and search visibility.

Multiple provider support. Stores API keys for several AI providers at once, including OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, xAI Grok, Moonshot AI Kimi, and Google Gemini, and lets the site owner switch which one is active. A Test Connection option confirms a stored key and model are working before running bulk generation.

Good to Know About ExertPro Image Optimizer

According to the plugin’s FAQ, an AI provider key is only needed for the alt text feature; image compression and unused image scanning work without one. The developer notes that API keys are stored encrypted in the site’s database and are sent only to the provider they belong to, and only when generation or a connection test is triggered.

Usage through any provider is billed and metered by that provider directly, not by the plugin. The documentation also confirms WooCommerce compatibility, with the unused image scanner checking product images and galleries when WooCommerce is active.
