Accessibility Assistant

Updated 3 min read

Accessibility Assistant is a WordPress plugin built to make sites easier to use for visitors with visual, cognitive, or reading challenges. It adds a floating widget to the front end of a site, giving visitors one-click access to accessibility profiles and adjustment tools that support alignment with standards such as WCAG 2.1, ADA, Section 508, and EAA.

The plugin’s text-to-speech feature relies on Readabler AI, a cloud service from Merkulove, to generate natural-sounding speech from page content in multiple languages and voices. To use this and related features, a site owner creates a Readabler account, selects a plan, and pastes the resulting Assistant Token into the plugin’s settings screen; without a saved token, the plugin runs only from its bundled files and does not contact the external service.

Once configured, the assistant appears as a floating icon on the site, and all controls are managed from the AI Assistant tab in the plugin settings within the WordPress dashboard.

Key Features of Accessibility Assistant

AI text-to-speech. Reads on-page content aloud using neural network-generated speech, covering not just plain text but also dynamic content, forms, and interface elements. Multiple languages, accents, and voice genders are supported, helping blind and visually impaired visitors follow along.

One-click accessibility profiles. The widget offers preset profiles such as Visually Impaired, Cognitive Disabilities, ADHD, and Epilepsy Safe Mode, letting visitors activate a set of adjustments suited to their needs in a single click. The interface is responsive and adapts to any screen size.

Visual and reading adjustments. Visitors can scale font size, adjust line, letter, and word spacing, and switch to dyslexia-friendly fonts. High contrast, grayscale, inverted colors, brightness controls, and pointer or focus highlighting are also available for easier reading.

Orientation and navigation aids. Tools such as an on-screen keyboard, screen ruler, and screen magnifier help visitors navigate more comfortably. Real-time highlighting of headers, links, and interactive elements makes it easier to find and use page content.

No-code setup. The plugin installs and runs without any coding, and is built to work with common WordPress themes and page builders including Elementor, WPBakery, and Gutenberg. Its scripts load asynchronously so they do not slow down the site or conflict with other scripts.

Standards-oriented design. The plugin is built with compliance in mind, addressing guidelines including WCAG 2.1, ADA, Section 508, and EAA, helping site owners work toward a more inclusive and legally mindful web presence.

Good to Know About Accessibility Assistant

The developer notes that the plugin requires WordPress, PHP, and MySQL, along with a webserver running mod_rewrite, adequate memory allocation, and HTTPS support for best performance. The AI text-to-speech and related cloud features only activate once an Assistant Token is saved in settings; without one, the plugin operates solely from its bundled files with no external requests.

When a token is present, each visitor’s browser loads scripts from the Readabler service, which receives the token along with the visitor’s IP address, browser user agent, and page address, but no other personal data. Site owners enabling this connection are advised to update their own privacy policy accordingly.
