AltScribe

Updated 2 min read

AltScribe scans the WordPress Media Library to find images that are missing alt text, then helps site owners fix them quickly. It suits anyone who wants to improve accessibility for screen-reader users and give search engines better information about their images, without manually rewriting alt text one image at a time.

Site owners can generate suggestions with an AI model or type their own text, and every suggestion can be edited before or after it is saved.

The AI part works by connecting to a vision model capable of reading images, chosen from providers such as Cloudflare Workers AI, OpenRouter, Google Gemini, OpenAI, or Anthropic, or through a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint including self-hosted options like Ollama or LM Studio.

Site owners supply their own API key for whichever provider they pick, and results appear directly in the Media Library and the plugin’s Auditor tab, written into standard WordPress attachment alt text fields.

Key Features of AltScribe

Alt text auditor. Scans the Media Library and lists every image with empty or missing alt text, giving a clear starting point for cleanup work.

Fix Now and Fix All. Generates alt text for a single image or runs across the whole library at once, with handling designed to keep working smoothly if a rate limit is hit.

Multi-provider support with fallback. Connects to several AI providers at the same time and automatically falls back to another if one is unavailable, so a bulk run does not stall partway through.

Manual editing and vector file support. Alt text can be typed and saved manually at any time, and SVG or other vector files receive a title-based suggestion since AI models cannot read them.

Smart context for accuracy. Sends the image title, caption, description, and a cleaned filename hint along with the image itself, helping the AI produce more accurate descriptions.

Page-level content sync. Optionally updates the alt attribute of matching images already embedded in published posts and pages, filling only empty or missing values without altering anything else in the content.

Step 4: Choose an active model. Open the Active Model tab, select a vision model, save the setting, and use Test AI Connection to confirm it works.

Good to Know About AltScribe

According to the plugin’s documentation, no AI provider is required to be paid: Cloudflare Workers AI and several OpenRouter models offer free tiers, and a self-hosted model can be run through the Custom endpoint at no cost. The developer notes that existing ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscriptions cannot be used, since those services require a separate API key from the provider’s developer platform.

Alt text is stored in native WordPress attachment meta, so it remains in place even if the plugin is removed, and uninstalling only clears the plugin’s own settings. No data is sent anywhere until a provider is connected and a generation request is made.
