Bernerslee Site Diagnostics & Recovery

Updated 3 min read

Bernerslee Site Diagnostics & Recovery is a troubleshooting plugin for WordPress administrators who need to work out why a site broke and what changed just before it did. It captures fatal errors, checks common site-health signals, and lines up that information against recent plugin, theme, and core changes so the likely cause becomes easier to spot.

All of this local check-up work happens on the site itself, with no diagnostic data sent anywhere. When the findings point to related signals but no single confident cause, the administrator can turn to optional AI analysis, choosing a provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, or several other supported services and supplying that provider’s own API key.

The redacted diagnostic payload can be previewed before it is sent, and results appear back in the Bernerslee check-up screen inside WordPress.

Key Features of Bernerslee Site Diagnostics & Recovery

Fatal error capture and grouping. Bernerslee catches PHP fatal shutdown errors and groups them, attributing each error path to WordPress core, a plugin, a theme, custom code, or PHP itself so the source is easier to trace.

Change timeline tracking. The plugin records plugin activations, deactivations, and updates, theme switches, and core updates, letting administrators line up a break in the site against what changed around the same time.

Site-health checks. A built-in check-up reviews homepage loopback access, REST API status, WP-Cron and overdue events, memory limits, production debug settings, and available updates, along with autoloaded option data, expired transients, and post revisions.

Historical reports and export. Check-up results are saved over time so administrators can compare past and current states, and a redacted JSON report can be exported for records or for sharing with someone else.

Built-in recovery actions. Bernerslee can clear expired transients, refresh permalink rules, and disable the built-in plugin and theme file editors, and it links directly to the native Plugins screen when a plugin is suspected.

Optional AI analysis with provider choice. When local checks cannot confidently identify a root cause, an administrator can select an AI provider, supply its API key, and explicitly start a request; the AI output is advisory and meant to be checked before any change is made.

Good to Know About Bernerslee Site Diagnostics & Recovery

According to the plugin’s documentation, AI is entirely optional: error capture, local check-ups, change timelines, report export, and the built-in recovery actions all work without it. The developer notes that Bernerslee cannot repair 502, 503, or 504 errors while WordPress itself is unable to run, since diagnosing those often requires hosting or server-level logs a plugin cannot access; it can review WordPress-level errors and recent changes once access returns.

No data is sent automatically, and remote AI requests happen only after an administrator configures a provider and explicitly starts an analysis or connection test. AI output is explanatory only, since Bernerslee does not execute any AI-generated commands on the site.
