Answer Pilot is built for WordPress site owners who want to understand how their content performs inside AI answer engines rather than just traditional search results. It brings together citation tracking, AI crawler logging, and content readiness tools aimed at making a site more visible and citable when tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude generate answers touching on its topics.
The citation tracking feature works by sending your configured keywords to Perplexity using an API key you obtain yourself and paste into the plugin settings, along with your brand name.
The plugin phrases these queries in your site’s own language, parses the returned answer and cited sources, and stores the results locally in your WordPress database. Results, including citation rate and matched excerpts, appear on the plugin’s own AI Citations dashboard inside the WordPress admin area.

Key Features of Answer Pilot
Brand citation tracking. Runs your chosen keywords against Perplexity on a schedule and checks whether your brand name appears in the answer text or in the sources it cites. Query phrasing follows your site’s language, with templates available for English, Dutch, French, German, and Spanish.
llms.txt generation. Automatically builds llms.txt and llms-full.txt files that follow the proposed standard for giving AI systems a readable index of your site. The files are cached and rebuilt whenever your content changes.
AI bot crawl analytics. Detects visits from a range of known AI crawlers, including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Apple, Meta, ByteDance, Amazon, Common Crawl, Cohere, and Mistral. Each visit is logged locally without recording IP addresses, and old entries are pruned daily according to a retention period you set.
Robots.txt analyzer. Checks your site’s robots.txt file against the list of known AI crawlers so you can see which ones are allowed and which are accidentally blocked, often by a security plugin. This helps catch configurations that keep AI systems from reading your content at all.
Content extractability scoring. Scores each post from 0 to 100 across nine heuristics related to how easily AI systems can read and extract its content, shown as a letter grade. Suggestions appear directly in the editor sidebar so you can address issues on the post you are working on.
FAQ schema generation. Scans your posts for question-style headings and automatically adds FAQPage structured data in JSON-LD format. This is aimed at improving the chances of being cited when AI engines look for direct answers to questions.
Admin dashboard. Brings together metric cards, hits per crawler, top crawled pages, extractability rankings, robots.txt findings, and citation history with sources in one place. This gives a single view of how both AI crawlers and AI answer engines are treating your site.

Step 1: Install and activate. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Answer Pilot, then click Install Now followed by Activate.
Step 2: Flush permalinks. Visit Settings > Permalinks and click Save so the rewrite rules for the llms.txt file take effect.
Step 3: Check the generated file. Open the llms.txt address on your own site to confirm the generator produced the file correctly.
Step 4: Add your Perplexity API key. Go to Answer Pilot > Settings and enter your Perplexity API key, your brand name, and up to 25 keywords you want tracked.
Step 5: Run your first citation check. Open Answer Pilot > AI Citations and click Run citations now to see whether Perplexity currently cites your brand for the configured keywords.
Good to Know About Answer Pilot
According to the plugin’s documentation, Answer Pilot is meant to run alongside an existing SEO plugin rather than replace it, since it focuses specifically on AI search engines; its FAQ schema output can be turned off if another plugin already handles that markup.
The developer notes that citation accuracy depends on matching your brand name or its aliases within the AI response text or cited source URLs, with a matched excerpt shown so results can be verified manually. Bot-hit logs are kept for a configurable retention window, and citation results are retained for a set period, with both pruned automatically on a daily basis.
