Scolta AI Search

Updated 3 min read

Scolta AI Search brings site search to WordPress without requiring a dedicated search server. It builds a static index at publish time and runs the actual search in the visitor’s browser using WebAssembly, which makes it a practical option for site owners on managed hosting platforms where installing something like Elasticsearch or Solr is not possible.

On top of that static search layer, Scolta can optionally hand off queries to an AI provider for query expansion and result summarization. Site owners can connect Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint including a self-hosted Ollama instance, by entering an API key in the plugin’s settings or wp-config.php file.

This AI layer stays off by default and only activates once an administrator explicitly enables it and supplies a provider; when active, expanded results and summaries appear alongside the regular search output on the front end.

The plugin is built and maintained by Tag1 Consulting, an open-source consulting firm, and is aimed at site owners who want relevant, fast search without adding server infrastructure or ongoing hosting costs for a search index.

Key Features of Scolta AI Search

Server-free static search index. Scolta builds an inverted search index when content is published, so there is no need to run Elasticsearch, Solr, or any other external search service. All searching happens client-side in the visitor’s browser through a WASM engine.

Compatible with managed hosting. Because the PHP indexer does not rely on exec() or Node.js, Scolta works on managed hosts such as WP Engine, Kinsta, Flywheel, and Pantheon where running a search server is not an option.

Search-as-you-type suggestions. Visitors see a dropdown of suggestions as they type, including their own recent searches, and the full search only runs once they commit to a query.

Optional AI query expansion and summaries. When an administrator enables it and configures a provider, Scolta can expand search queries and summarize results using Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint such as a self-hosted Ollama instance.

Configurable relevance scoring. Site owners can tune how results are ranked, including boosting title or content matches and applying recency decay so newer content can rank higher.

Shortcode and WP-CLI support. The [scolta_search] shortcode embeds the search interface on any page, while WP-CLI commands let administrators build and maintain the search index from the command line.

Automatic index rebuilds. With Action Scheduler in place, Scolta tracks content changes and queues background rebuilds of the search index automatically, keeping search results current without manual work.

Light resource footprint. The plugin keeps peak memory use low, which the developer describes as safe for shared hosting environments with limited resources.

How to Install Scolta AI Search

Step 1: Install and activate. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Scolta AI Search, click Install Now, then Activate.

Step 2: Build the search index. Run wp scolta build via WP-CLI to generate the static search index for your content.

Step 3: Add the search box to a page. Place the [scolta_search] shortcode on any page or post where you want the search interface to appear.

Step 4: Enable AI features (optional). Visit Settings > Scolta to enable AI query expansion and summaries, either by connecting your own Anthropic, OpenAI, or OpenAI-compatible key, or by defining SCOLTA_API_KEY in wp-config.php.

Step 5: Keep the index current. Install Action Scheduler and turn on auto_rebuild in Settings > Scolta so the index rebuilds automatically whenever content is saved.

Good to Know About Scolta AI Search

According to the plugin’s documentation, the base search tier works entirely without an API key, and no remote requests of any kind occur until an administrator explicitly enables AI features or configures a provider. The developer notes that the plugin requires no server-side search infrastructure and runs its PHP indexer without exec() or Node.js, making it compatible with common managed hosting providers.

WooCommerce product data, including price, SKU, stock status, and categories, is automatically indexed, and WooCommerce sites already include Action Scheduler needed for automatic index rebuilds. Site owners on catalog or recipe-style sites can switch to a wider search preset under Settings > Scolta > Site Type if default results seem too narrow.
