Askledge

Updated 3 min read

Askledge adds a chat-style question box to a WordPress site so visitors can ask things in plain language and get answers pulled from the site’s own content.

It suits site owners who want a searchable assistant for posts, pages, custom post types, WooCommerce products, taxonomy terms, and selected ACF fields, without exposing anything beyond what they explicitly allow it to read. When a question has no answer on the site, it says so and offers a fallback contact option instead of guessing.

By default Askledge needs no AI service at all: it matches a visitor’s question against an index built from the chosen content and replies with the best-matching page plus a list of related links and excerpts, entirely on the site’s own server.

An optional mode can have those matched excerpts written up into a sentence by an AI service of the site owner’s choosing; this requires entering that service’s endpoint address, API key and model name, since no provider is built in and nothing is sent until this is configured. Answers, whichever mode is used, appear in the chat box wherever it is placed on the site.

Key Features of Askledge

Curated answers. Site owners can design rich answers by hand using plain text, numbered steps, cards drawn from existing posts or products, or link lists with optional buttons. These are stored as structured data and rendered by the plugin, so no raw HTML from the admin ever reaches the page.

Manual question and answer pairs. Simple one-line question and answer pairs can be typed in and are returned to visitors exactly as written, giving precise control over common queries.

Human handoff options. Visitors asking to reach a person can be shown contact actions such as email, phone, WhatsApp, a contact page, or a custom link. WhatsApp handoff opens the visitor’s own app directly with them, without the site ever seeing or storing the conversation.

Local answers for common questions. Facts like contact details, location, hours, offerings, and pricing are read directly from the site’s own pages to answer frequent questions, recognized in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic, all processed on the site’s server.

Content source control. Site owners choose exactly which post types, taxonomies, and individually ticked ACF fields the assistant may read, and field or post-type names resembling personal or order data can never be selected at all.

WooCommerce and multilingual support. With WooCommerce active, product titles, prices, descriptions, and visible attributes can be indexed and searched. Polylang sites get per-language indexing, with a configurable option for falling back to another language when nothing matches.

Flexible placement. The assistant can appear as a site-wide floating Ask button, through the Askledge shortcode or block, or as a widget under Appearance, Widgets, with Display Rules controlling exactly where it shows or is excluded.

Privacy-conscious logging and key storage. An optional, off-by-default question log records only the question text, language, and whether it was answered, with no IP address or user ID stored. API keys are protected using authenticated encryption tied to the site’s own salts.

How to Install Askledge

Step 1: Install the plugin. From the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Askledge, then click Install Now.

Step 2: Activate Askledge. Once installed, click Activate to enable the plugin on the site.

Step 3: Turn on the assistant. Go to Askledge > Overview and switch the assistant on. No key or account is needed since the default Search mode works immediately.

Step 4: Choose content sources and build the index. Go to Content Sources, tick the post types, taxonomies, and any ACF fields the assistant may read, then press Build Index. Press Rebuild Index whenever these choices change.

Step 5: Add curated answers and handoff options. Optionally, write preferred answers under Curated Answers and set up contact actions under Human Handoff so visitors can reach a real person.

Step 6: Optionally enable AI-composed answers. Under Answers & Behaviour, switch to Composed by AI and enter the endpoint address, key, and model of a chosen AI service, then use Test Connection to confirm it works.

Good to Know About Askledge

According to the plugin’s documentation, no API key or AI account is required, since the default Search mode answers entirely from a site’s own indexed content; a key is only needed if AI mode is deliberately enabled, using a service the site owner selects.

The developer notes that ACF fields are never indexed automatically, and post types resembling order, booking, or customer data are permanently excluded from selection regardless of settings. It also notes compatibility with WooCommerce and Polylang, and that users migrating from the plugin’s previous name keep all settings, content index, and shortcode aliases intact.
