FluffAlt writes alt text for images automatically, using a vision AI model to describe each picture instead of leaving site owners to type descriptions by hand.
It suits anyone who wants better image SEO and stronger accessibility compliance without spending hours filling in the alt field on every attachment, whether for new uploads or a media library that already has hundreds of untagged images.
The plugin connects to any OpenAI-compatible chat API, so it works with providers such as OpenAI, OpenRouter, Cloudflare Workers AI, or a custom endpoint you specify, and requires you to supply your own API key for the provider you choose.
Each request sends a downscaled copy of the image with a short prompt and returns generated alt text, which appears directly in the image’s alt field in the Media Library, in the Gutenberg Image block, or on the relevant post’s images after publishing or bulk processing.

Key Features of FluffAlt
One-click generation button. A Generate alt text button appears in the Media Library and directly under the alt field in the Gutenberg Image block, letting you create a description for a single image without leaving the editing screen.
Automatic generation on publish or upload. The plugin can scan a post when it moves from draft to published and generate alt text only for images actually used in the content, or generate as soon as an image is added while writing, with a configurable delay to account for edits in progress.
Background bulk generation. A tool on the settings page lets you pick a post type, category, or tag, see how many images are missing alt text, and process them in the background so you can close the tab and check progress later.
Error log with retry. Images that fail to generate are listed on the settings page with options to retry or dismiss them, so a bulk job or automatic run does not leave gaps unnoticed.
Language and content controls. You can choose the output language from a dropdown that defaults to the site language, optionally copy the generated text into the attachment title, caption, and description, and skip decorative images by minimum size or filename pattern.
Existing alt text is preserved. Images that already have alt text written in are left untouched by automatic generation, so the plugin only fills gaps rather than overwriting manual work.

Good to Know About FluffAlt
According to the plugin’s FAQ, an API key from the chosen provider is required since none is bundled, and requests are billed by that provider directly, though some providers offer free vision models or a free tier.
The developer notes that deleting the plugin never removes alt text, since it is stored in the standard WordPress attachment field; only the plugin’s own settings are erased, and only if the clean uninstall option is checked beforehand. The FAQ also mentions that a 403 or access-denied error usually means the provider is blocking requests from the server’s region, which can be resolved by switching providers or using a reachable custom endpoint.
