NHR Smart Media Manager

Updated 4 min read

NHR Smart Media Manager helps site owners bring order to a cluttered WordPress media library by adding virtual folders, a dedicated Smart Library page, and tools for writing image alt text automatically.

It suits anyone managing large numbers of images and files, whether for blog posts, product galleries, or general site content, who wants to organize uploads without moving files on disk and without typing alt text by hand for every image.

The AI alt text feature works through the WordPress AI Client and the AI connector you set up yourself at Settings > Connectors, such as an Anthropic or OpenAI connector plugin.

When you request alt text, a caption, a title, or a description, the plugin sends the image and a short prompt to that connector, which passes it to the AI provider; the generated text is then saved to the file in your media library. No AI provider is required for the folder and organization features, which work entirely on their own.

Because folders are virtual, organizing the library this way never changes a file’s URL or breaks where it’s already used on the site.

Key Features of NHR Smart Media Manager

Virtual folder system. Create nested folders, stored as a custom taxonomy, to organize media without moving files on disk. Folders can be colored, dragged into a custom order, and searched from the folder tree.

Folders throughout the media library. A folder tree appears in the media modal used by the block editor, featured image picker, and page builders, and a folder dropdown is added to Media > Library in both grid and list view. Files can also be uploaded directly into a chosen folder, and the same file can belong to more than one folder.

Folder gallery block. The Folder Gallery block, or the accompanying shortcode, turns any folder into an image gallery that updates itself whenever images are added, removed, or reordered in that folder. Columns, image size, image count, and linking behavior can all be set.

Bulk editing and file management. Select multiple files to move them, assign them to a folder, edit title, alt text, caption, and description together, download them as a ZIP, or send them to the trash for later restoring. A file details panel also shows editable metadata and where each file is used across the site.

Search, filters, and dedicated views. Search by title, file name, alt text, or caption, and filter by file type, upload date, or uploader. Separate views list every image missing alt text and scan the library for files that appear unused in posts, custom fields, or product galleries.

AI-generated alt text and metadata. Generate alt text, captions, titles, or descriptions for one file, a selection, or every image missing alt text, using the AI connector configured in WordPress. Options include choosing the language, model, maximum length, extra instructions, and whether to include the page title and SEO focus keyphrase as context, plus an option to generate alt text automatically on upload.

Import from other folder plugins. Folder structures and file assignments can be imported from several other media organization plugins, and a folder structure can be exported as a JSON file for use on another site.

Automation and multisite support. A WP-CLI command can generate alt text in bulk, and six abilities registered with the WordPress Abilities API let permitted AI agents or MCP clients list folders and files, check for missing alt text, and make limited edits. Each site in a multisite network keeps its own separate folders and settings.

Good to Know About NHR Smart Media Manager

According to the plugin’s documentation, folders and file assignments are stored as WordPress taxonomy terms rather than by moving files, so existing file URLs and uses stay intact. The developer notes that AI features are optional and require a separately configured AI connector, while folder browsing, bulk editing, and search all work without one.

For AI agent or MCP access, the developer notes that the WordPress MCP Adapter plugin must be installed separately, and that registered abilities are limited to users with Editor-level permissions or above and cannot delete or replace files or folders. The plugin supports PHP 7.4 and later versions.
