PublisherKits ExcerptBuilder

Updated 3 min read

PublisherKits ExcerptBuilder helps site owners and editors stop skipping the excerpt field. It generates post excerpts on demand or offers a draft automatically when a post is published without one, which matters because excerpts often show up in search results, feeds, archive listings and social previews whether or not anyone wrote one by hand.

The plugin relies on the WordPress AI Client rather than running its own AI service. You connect a provider at Settings > Connectors, as you would for any other plugin that uses the AI Client, and ExcerptBuilder simply draws on whatever is already configured there instead of asking for a separate key.

Generated text appears in a preview box in the post editor, where you choose whether to save it, or as a draft offered at the publish step for posts that have no excerpt yet.

Because it shares the site-wide AI connection, ExcerptBuilder also picks up a description of your publication and its readers from its own Customize tab, so the wording it produces is aimed at your actual audience rather than a generic one.

Key Features of PublisherKits ExcerptBuilder

Write mode. Creates a brand-new excerpt from the post title and body content, useful for posts that have never had one.

Rewrite mode. Improves an existing excerpt and corrects it against the post content, so an outdated or inaccurate summary can be refreshed without starting over.

Tidy mode. Fixes only spelling, typos, capitalization and stray line breaks in an excerpt that is already accurate, leaving the meaning and wording otherwise untouched.

On-demand generation in the editor. A box on the post edit screen lets you generate, preview and save an excerpt before it goes live, working in both the block editor and the Classic Editor.

Excerpts at publish. When an editor publishes a post with no excerpt, ExcerptBuilder offers a draft for confirmation. For scheduled, imported or REST-driven publishing, where no editor is present, it can write the excerpt directly or hold it for later review, depending on your setting.

Audience and publication framing. A short description of your site, its type and its readers, entered on the Customize tab, is passed to the model so Write and Rewrite produce excerpts pitched at your actual audience rather than a generic reader.

Shared AI connection, no separate key. ExcerptBuilder stores no provider key of its own and reads whichever AI provider is already configured through the WordPress AI Client, letting you pick a preferred model and run a self-test to confirm the connection works.

How to Install PublisherKits ExcerptBuilder

Step 1: Install and activate. From the dashboard go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for PublisherKits ExcerptBuilder, then click Install Now followed by Activate.

Step 2: Connect an AI provider. Go to Settings > Connectors and configure the AI provider you want to use. ExcerptBuilder stores no key of its own and uses whatever is set up on this screen.

Step 3: Check the Setup tab. Open ExcerptBuilder from the admin sidebar, confirm the status reads Ready, and optionally choose a preferred model or run the self-test.

Step 4: Describe your site. On the Customize tab, enter a short description of your publication, its type and its readers, and set a default mode, length and tone.

Step 5: Generate excerpts in posts. Edit a post and use the ExcerptBuilder box to Write, Rewrite or Tidy the excerpt, then preview and save the result.

Step 6: Enable publish-time drafts. Optionally turn on Excerpts at publish so a draft excerpt is offered whenever a post is published without one, including scheduled or imported posts.

Good to Know About PublisherKits ExcerptBuilder

According to the plugin’s documentation, ExcerptBuilder depends on the WordPress AI Client, so it needs a WordPress release that includes it and remains inactive on earlier ones. The developer notes that no excerpt is generated unless an AI provider is configured at Settings > Connectors, since the plugin has no hosted fallback of its own.

Existing excerpts are never overwritten automatically: Write and Rewrite only act when triggered in the editor, and the publish-time draft only applies to posts with an empty excerpt. Uninstalling the plugin keeps its settings unless an explicit option to delete them is turned on.
