Catfish Wrangler

Updated 2 min read

Catfish Wrangler helps site owners and moderators spot suspicious submissions without manually checking every comment, review, or uploaded image. It scans new comments, reviews, and media uploads for romance-scam language, template-style fake reviews, and signs that a photo was AI-generated, then marks anything questionable with a color-coded badge inside the Comments list and Media Library where moderators already work.

The plugin sends new comment and review text, along with newly uploaded images, to the Content Guard API for analysis, with image checks partly handled by a sub-processor called Hive Moderation.

This requires an account and an API key from Content Guard, entered under Settings > Catfish Wrangler; nothing is transmitted until that key is configured. Results appear directly as badges next to the relevant comment, review, or media item inside the WordPress admin.

Key Features of Catfish Wrangler

Scam language detection. Comments and profile-style text are checked for common romance-scam phrasing, such as claims of being stationed overseas, refusal to video call, or attempts to move a conversation off-platform or request money.

Fake review pattern flagging. Generic, template-style review text is identified so moderators can spot reviews that look scripted rather than genuine.

AI-generated image flagging. Uploaded images are checked against a live visual AI-detection model to flag pictures that appear artificially generated rather than photographed.

Camera metadata checks. Images are checked for the camera metadata a real photograph would typically carry, helping surface uploads that may not be genuine photos.

Profile photo consistency check. A profile’s set of photos is compared for consistency, flagging cases where some images carry real camera metadata and others do not.

Color-coded admin badges. Flagged comments, reviews, and images are marked with badges directly in the Comments list and Media Library, alongside content already under review, with flagging on by default and no automatic blocking unless enabled.

How to Install Catfish Wrangler

Step 1: Install the plugin. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Catfish Wrangler, click Install Now, then Activate.

Step 2: Add your API key. Go to Settings > Catfish Wrangler and enter a Content Guard API key; you will need to sign up with Content Guard to obtain one.

Step 3: Leave auto-hold off at first. Keep the option to automatically hold flagged comments turned off initially so you can observe how flagging performs on your site.

Step 4: Review flagged items. Watch the Catfish Wrangler column in the Comments list and Media Library to see which submissions get flagged before deciding on next steps.

Step 5: Enable auto-hold if desired. Once satisfied with the flagging accuracy, turn on automatic holding of flagged comments under Settings > Catfish Wrangler, with a configurable sensitivity threshold.

Good to Know About Catfish Wrangler

The plugin depends entirely on an active Content Guard API key; without one it performs no analysis and behaves as if it were not installed. According to the documentation, it fails open if the API is unreachable, meaning comments and uploads are never blocked due to an outage.

The developer notes that WooCommerce product reviews are covered automatically since they are stored as standard WordPress comments. Image analysis is partly carried out by a sub-processor, Hive Moderation, under its own terms, and no content is sent externally until an API key is entered in the settings.
