Draftsmith AI Content Assistant

Updated 3 min read

Draftsmith AI Content Assistant is built for WordPress site owners and editors who want help drafting posts, refining copy, and handling routine SEO text without leaving the dashboard. It adds a Content Management Panel that covers everything from generating a full article out of a single idea to polishing an existing draft, suggesting titles, and writing meta descriptions and tags.

The AI work is done by Anthropic’s Claude models, with DeepSeek available as an optional alternative provider. Each option requires its own API key, entered on the plugin’s settings screen, and requests are only sent when a generation action is triggered, never automatically.

Results appear either in a central dashboard, where a generated piece can become a draft post in one click, or in a sidebar assistant inside the post editor, which works with both the block editor and the Classic Editor.

Beyond generation, Draftsmith includes an optional MCP connector that lets an external client such as Claude connect to the site over OAuth to manage content, media, and SEO directly from a conversation, with granular permission controls.

Key Features of Draftsmith AI Content Assistant

Idea-to-draft dashboard. A central dashboard turns a single idea into a full post, an outline, or an introduction, and any of these can be converted into a draft post with one click.

In-editor sidebar assistant. A sidebar toolbox appears inside the post editor, working with both the block editor and the Classic Editor, so writers can get AI help without switching screens.

Title suggestions. The assistant reads the post’s content and proposes five candidate titles, giving editors quick alternatives to choose from.

Text improvement tools. Selected text can be rewritten, expanded, summarized, or checked for spelling and grammar issues directly from the editor sidebar.

SEO meta description generation. The plugin can generate an SEO meta description for a post and save it, handling a task that otherwise requires writing copy by hand.

One-click tag suggestions. Relevant tags are suggested based on the post content and can be added to the post immediately without retyping them.

In-context chat panel. A chat panel lets editors ask questions about the specific post they are working on, using it as a conversational reference while writing.

Choice of provider and model. Settings let the site owner pick between Claude and DeepSeek models, set a writing tone, default language, and output length, and store API keys locally in the site’s own database with capability checks and nonces on requests.

How to Install Draftsmith AI Content Assistant

Step 1: Install and activate. In the dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Draftsmith AI Content Assistant, click Install Now, then Activate.

Step 2: Add an API key. Go to Draftsmith > Settings and enter a Claude API key obtained from the Anthropic console; a DeepSeek key can be added instead or as well if that provider is preferred.

Step 3: Test the connection. Click Test Connection on the settings screen to confirm the key works before generating any content.

Step 4: Generate content. Use the dashboard to generate a post from an idea, or open any post and use the assistant box in the editor sidebar to improve text, suggest titles, tags, or a meta description.

Step 5: Optionally enable the MCP connector. Go to Draftsmith > MCP Connection, turn on the MCP server, and follow the on-screen steps to let a client such as Claude manage content, media, and SEO through an approved connection.

Good to Know About Draftsmith AI Content Assistant

The plugin stores API keys in the site’s own options table, sending each key only to its matching provider when a generation action runs. According to its documentation, using a Claude model requires an Anthropic account and API key with available usage credit, while DeepSeek is a separate, optional provider needing its own key; only one is necessary.

The MCP connector requires HTTPS in production and stays disabled until turned on, with delete permissions off by default even after enabling it. Rank Math is not required, though its absence limits some SEO tools, and its redirection module is needed specifically for redirect-related tools.
