Dropndot AI Content for Custom Fields

Updated 3 min read

Dropndot AI Content for Custom Fields is built for WordPress site owners who regularly fill in custom fields, such as meta descriptions, summaries, or taglines, and want a faster way to draft that text without leaving the post editor.

It detects the custom fields already present on a post, whether created with Advanced Custom Fields, Meta Box, Pods, standard WordPress fields, Yoast SEO, or Rank Math, and lets an editor generate suitable content for each one with a single click.

The AI part works in one of two ways. A site administrator can enter a personal OpenAI or Google Gemini API key in the plugin settings, in which case requests go straight from the server to that provider; or, on sites running a version of WordPress that supports Settings > Connectors, the plugin can instead use whichever AI provider is connected there, through the WordPress AI Client, without a key stored in the plugin itself.

Generated text appears directly inside the custom field being edited, where it can be reviewed and adjusted before the post is saved.

Key Features of Dropndot AI Content for Custom Fields

Automatic field detection. The plugin scans a post for custom fields from ACF, Meta Box, Pods, standard WordPress fields, Yoast SEO, and Rank Math, and works out the likely content type from each field’s name so generation starts with a sensible instruction.

One-click generation with preview. Editors can generate content for any enabled field with a single click and review or edit the result before it is saved to the post, so nothing is published without a check.

Custom prompts and length limits. Each field can be given its own prompt along with a character or word limit, which is useful for constrained text such as meta descriptions or short social snippets. A post-processing safety net and sentence-boundary truncation keep output within the set limit without cutting words off mid-sentence.

Internal link suggestions. The plugin can extract keywords from a post and match them against other content on the site to suggest internal links, which an editor can review and approve before they are applied.

AI chat about the article. A chat assistant lets an editor ask questions about the content being worked on and get suggestions for improvement, keeping context from earlier messages during the same session.

Usage guardrails and monitoring. Per-user rate limiting and site-wide daily caps on requests and tokens help keep AI usage under control, and the settings area shows today’s usage along with a log of the most recent AI calls.

Token-saving generation. The plugin sends less of the surrounding article content when a short output is requested and uses concise system instructions, reducing the chance of hitting a provider’s token limit.

Flexible field and format support. Generation works across plain text, WYSIWYG, JSON, and list-style fields, and access can be restricted per user so only chosen editors can trigger AI generation.

Good to Know About Dropndot AI Content for Custom Fields

The plugin requires a WordPress version that supports Settings > Connectors if an administrator wants to use that connection method instead of a stored API key, and relies on the cURL functionality built into WordPress to reach the AI provider. According to the documentation, stored API keys are encrypted using a key derived from the site’s own salts and are never displayed back in the settings screen.

Each AI request is also logged locally on the site and that log is pruned automatically after a set period. Uninstalling the plugin keeps its settings by default, though an option exists to erase all stored data when the plugin is deleted.
